Massac County Illinois is located on the Ohio River in southernmost Illinois and has a population of 15,161 and a total area of 242 sq miles.  Metropolis, the county seat is located at Exit 37 on Interstate 24 and has much to offer!

Metropolis is the official Home of Superman and proudly honors it favorite son with a 15-foot bronze statue of American's Super Hero right in the middle of Superman Square.  And now, a new statue of actress Noel Neil, posed as Lois Lane, stands just blocks down the street.  The annual Superman Celebration is held each June to honor the Superhero and draws thousands to town each year.

Metropolis is also home to Fort Massac State Park, the first state park in Illinois.  At Fort Massac, you will not only enjoy the breathtaking views of the Ohio River, but you can take a walk back in time by visiting the 1802 replica of the fort that once served to protect French, British and American troops.  The annual Encampment is held the third weekend of October at Fort Massac State Park.   Last year over 126,000 attended the event.

For over a decade, Massac County has hosted the ASA Illinois Pro/A Championship at Mermet Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area.  Professional & amateur archers from all over North American travel to Massac County to compete and vie for the $15,000 cash purse.

The Super City Blues & Ques festival is held every October.  On Friday a Backyard BBQ Competition is held and the main event, the Kansas City BBQ Society Cookoff is held on Saturday.  Live blues music accompanies the event held along Ferry Street near the riverfront.

For those who enjoy the excitement of gaming, Metropolis is also home to Harrah's Metropolis Casino & Hotel.  Harrah's is ready to entertain you with table games, slots, restaurants and an entertainment center that hosts many big name entertainers throughout the year. 

There are two school districts within Massac County, Massac Unit 1 and Joppa Maple Grove, where students are provided with an academically stimulating environment that will allow them to achieve their maximum educational potential.  Several universities and community colleges are located in close proximity to Massac County making secondary education an affordable option for the Massac County resident.
