Located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest, Johnson County has much to offer its residents, visitors & business community. Johnson County has a population of 13,730 and a total area of 345 sq miles. Vienna, the county seat is located at Exit 16 on Interstate 24.
With thirty-seven subdivisions to choose from that offer lake front, water view and off water properties, the Lake of Egypt area in Johnson County offers something for everyone. The Lake of Egypt has 2,300 acres of water and over 90 miles of shoreline. Whether you are considering becoming a property owner or you’re just a visitor, the lake has plenty to offer.
Thousands of acres of the Shawnee National Forest run through Johnson County. There are several accesses to horseback riding or hiking trails throughout the county.
The Cache River State Natural Area is located in southern Johnson County. Among the outstanding natural features found within the area today are massive cypress trees whose flared bases, called buttresses, exceed 40 feet circumference. Many are more than 1,000 years old, including one that has earned the title of state champion bald cypress because of its huge trunk girth, towering height, and heavily branched canopy. Wetlands within this area are so important to migratory waterfowl and shorebirds that they have been designated a Wetland of International Importance, only the 19th wetland in the United States to receive the distinction.
In 1984, the governor of Illinois declared Johnson County the “Bicycle Capital of Illinois. The Tunnel Hill State Trail stretches 45 miles from Harrisburg to Karnak, with its headquarters located in Vienna. The former railroad right-of-way has been converted into the bicycle trail with the old railroad tunnel being a highlight.
Another favorite area for the outdoor enthusiast is Ferne Clyffe State park, also located in Johnson County. Ferne Clyffe has been known as an outstanding natural scenic spot for nearly 100 years. An abundance of ferns, unique geological features and unusual plant communities create an atmosphere that enhances the many recreational facilities offered at the park. Trails wind through picturesque woods, allowing visitors to view fascinating rock formations and inspiring vistas.
If golf is your passion, a visit to Gambit Golf Club is a must! The course offers a championship layout routed through rolling meadows and woodlands, just outside of Vienna.
There are also wineries, bed & breakfasts, horseback riding trails and campgrounds galore located throughout Johnson County.
